The Council does not have "individuals" as members.
Rather, our membership consists of the local groups themselves.
Nonetheless, we do accept and appreciate individuals either from
member groups, non-member groups, or unaffiliated with a group
at all as volunteers for the breadth of work that needs to be
done. To become a voting member of the Council, your group needs
to be represented at a minimum of two meetings. If you don't yet
have a group and would like to start one, you are certainly welcome
to attend NYCdog meetings and meet the many experienced leaders
in the NYC off-leash world, but you should also go to our News
& Info page for more information on How to Start a Dog Owners
Group.
At the first meeting your group's representative(s)
attend, we will have you introduce yourself to the Council, and
describe your organization's structure and goals. Guidelines for
consideration of a group's membership status include a membership
of 25 people or more, representation of a NYC open space not already
represented in the Council, a mission statement, and agreement
with the mission of NYCdog (as stated on our Home Page). The second
meeting at which your group is represented, the Council can vote
on your membership status if you so desire, and if approved, your
group can then vote on all matters before the Council.
Meetings occur monthly, generally the last Thursday
of every month, at different locations around the city. Notices
of the meetings, along with an agenda, are sent out via e-mail
in advance of the meeting as a reminder of the date, time, and
location. We maintain an internal Council e-mail loop with all
member groups, new groups, and other interested parties subscribed
to this loop, so all important Council messages go out to all
involved. Any participant in the loop can post messages to the
loop as well. To get registered on the loop, send an e-mail to
info@nycdog and notify us
of your interest and background.
NYCdog's intent is to support the local groups
in their endeavors, to bring the voice of tens of thousands of
dog owners citywide to bear on issues of local concern to our
individual members. We do not attempt to decide what is best for
our local members, recognizing that particular circumstances differ
from one locale to another. Similarly, we count on the local groups
to support the organization in matters of city-wide import such
as off-leash legislation, establishment and maintenance of humane
off-leash recreational opportunities, responsible dog ownership,
and respectful park stewardship.
